Perhaps one of the trickiest jobs whilst setting up Silver FM was the installation of our transmitter. The important thing to consider when siting your transmitter is that you want to look for the highest ground around. Your broadcasting licence will only you to place your transmitter a given maximum distance above ground level, so making sure the transmitter is sited on the highest ground around will mean that your signal is stronger locally and travels a further distance around.
Our transmitter was installed on the roof of the bell tower of the local church. Getting up onto the roof was a different matter though! There were 5 flights of stairs and once you were actually in the loft where the bells were located you then climbed further ladders to get above the bells, walked along a little 6" width gangplank with the bells directly beneath you, before taking a final ladder onto the lead-lined roof. A superb view all round, but a little bit precarious in places! Take a look and you'll see what I mean!
